A team of scientists led by UCLA researchers recently published (April 2016) their findings that diets high in fructose can cause changes in brain gene networks related to metabolism and memory. Fructose is a sugar found in high amounts in soda drinks, fruits (especially fruit juices), and artificial foods. The indicated brain gene networks are highly complex, and altering them can cause a wide range of effects. However, the study also shows that combining a high-fructose diet with omega-3 fatty acid supplementation (specifically DHA) reverses the gene network changes.* Do you really need another reason to take your omega-3’s?
